You're absolutely right, Charlie. Anytime people start defining humans in a way that rules out one group, it won't be long until another group will be defined out of human status as well. Peter Singer's argument that parents ought to be able to kill their born children if they're under a certain age is a perfect example of this.
They're unfortunately eroding the basis for all human rights as soon as they start adding necessary characteristics beyond merely being human. This all opens up the door for some serious abuses of power.

Nicely done, Amy. The fact that the fetus is fully human and unique from a DNA perspective, and is a distinct entity from the mother is so unarguable that abortion-rights talk is now moving away from biology to other human characteristics. To be genuinely human is to have a sense of identity, and to be able to distinguish between myself and others. It is to have a will and to be able to act on my desires. Etc.
Thus can Peter Singer and others argue that children under the age of 1 are not truly human, and neither are people with severe brain defects or those in a persistent vegetive state. (Think Terry Schiavo)
To safeguard abortion at any stage right up to the point of delivery, one needs to make arguments that greatly expand the group of non-humans. Tough sledding ahead for the weak and those without a voice.
