Koppel's point was not to say, "Gee, it'd be nice if we supported our troops more." If it were, we'd be in agreement. What he's trying to do here, as he's done before, is exaggerate how bad the war really is. He's harking back to WWII with all of the sacrifices that needed to be made to support the troops by every single American. He's complaining that we're not being asked to make those same sacrifices. The reason we're not is because this is not WWII; it's nothing like it. For him to make the comparison is in no way a good point, it's ridiculous.
Our troops are not starving for resources and food; hence, there are no victory gardens in the way Koppel's thinking of. We should support our troops, but planting food for them simply isn't the right thing to do. What they really need from us is moral support. We need to celebrate what they do (such as the victory garden I created). We need to give money to organizations like Soldier's Angels. That would be taking the war seriously and properly doing our part.

Ok, so you don't agree with what should be done to help , but you shouldn't dodge the fact that not enough is being done to help "cary the burden." It is plenty big enough for more people to cary.
You personally may be doing something, but not enough American are. Volunteer at a VA hospital, with the Red Cross, or at Church. Koppel is right, "no one is being asked to do anything". There is in fact a great deal of pain and suffering, as a result of the war and otherwise, that could be allievieted through more charitable activities of a personal and corporate nature.
Every day solderies come home scared in so many diffeent ways, psychologically as well as phisically. What are we, what is the church doing to help?
Don't bash a good point, just because it comes from a sources you fundamentally disagree with.
