Micah, thanks–good question. I started writing a response and it turned into an entire post in itself. I'll post it later today. In my answer, I'll cite some examples from 24, but I'll do it in a vague, hopefully non-spoiler way.
But I will tell you this for now: one thing even manly men should not do is not watch 24. You ought to correct this as soon as possible.

I very much enjoyed reading this post, though it brought up a tangential issue that I'd love to see you reason about sometime Amy. Namely, the issue of doing “horrible things”, and you menioning 24 brought it to mind, which I very much want to see but have avoided thus far (waiting until I have a lot of time to watch them on DVD).
Anyway, I don't want to take attention away from the main thrust of your post (which I heartily endorse), but was curious about how you would draw lines between justice and “what must be done” in awful situations. Are there things even manly men should not do, even in a ticking bomb scenario?

Thanks, John. If I can encourage men to be men and, even more, to not be ashamed of being men but to rejoice in their gifts and use them well, then that's the best thing I can do for this society right now.
