I think emotionally, people will hang onto the historical details because they appear to be direct attacks on Christianity. I can apprecaite the desire to refute their foolishness. I did that a couple years back in a newsletter for my congregation.
I think though your issues are more central to the problem the book raises.

It's strange, but I think people are getting so bogged down by the details of the historical inaccuracies that they're missing the bigger picture of truth and paganism. I've been hearing very little about either, but these ideas are so foundational to the book and (I think) are more likely to influence people than anything else.
