"You conclude that churches must be God centered as opposed to consumer or Self centered. Since most Christians aren't involved in church leadership, how might individuals effect changes toward God centered Protestantism?
"It is hard, on the one hand, for those in what used to be called the pew to change the tenor and temper of their churches when their pastors are off chasing success, numbers, and cultural “relevance.” "
Amen - this is a critical question and on-target answer. As a man in the pew, involved in discipling men in my church, I pay close attention to the preaching, singing, programs, and the terms and methods used in all of those. I perceived much primary focus on man in myriad areas and requested a meeting with my elders, explaining my concerns and leaving them a letter detailing many examples.
The preaching elder - newest to the church of the bunch - admitted his focus had been "off" and made a change that many have noticed and thanked God for. Score one for the "man in the pew" - in a manner of speaking. I think it's a score for an elder who is willing to consider he might be in error and humble enough to change. Credit to God, and not any man.
Sorry to say, none of the other elders see anything wrong and it appears that the overall focus remains on man, though the preaching be much improved.
I fall back on Galatians 6:9 knowing it is of and to God we serve.
