Well, they don't act that different really. Maybe not worse, but not better either.
It's dissappointing because Christians are supposed to be different.

I agree.
It's important when we come to a text not to lose sight of the forest when inspecting the trees.
I say this because it sounds like the sermon applied the service that Christ imparted to his apostles to "all" people. This is a misunderstanding of the text and devalues the sacrifical ethic Jesus was teaching his apostles before his death, and resurrection.
We as brothers and sisters in Christ are to server "each other" in a special way - Christ showing us as he washed his apostles feet. We do not serve pagans as we serve our brothers and sisters in Christ, we serve them as Christ showed us not only with word but in action.
Now this raises a crucial question - how should we as Christ follower's relate ethically to others that are not Christ follower's?
I believe the Bible teaches that we ought to love others as we love ourselves - giving to the needy, taking care of the widowed, and helping the orphan. This is the great call that God commanded Israel throughout the old testament, and James even says in his letter that this is "real" religion.
What's the difference between both examples - intimacy. How does intimacy affect the service of one another? To be continued.

Hi there Hannibal,
I'm by no means an expert in this, and I'm not intending to be offensive, but wouldn't the people you are complaining about respond by saying, "Wonderful, you lead the way?"
That is what I keep hoping to see myself. I thought Christians were supposed to lead the world in that sense. As far as I can tell Christians act just like everyone else out there, maybe worse.
Thinking out loud here.
Cheers,
Han
